The Alpha Key originates from a specific historical moment in the present timeline, following decades of conflict involving "whispering" iron. In 1775, rebels discovered a portal to the plains of Leng filled with demons; when these demons tried to enter the real world without possessing someone, they turned into whispering iron. Young smith Benjamin Locke originally forged this metal into keys like the Omega Key. Centuries later, in the climax of the series, Tyler Locke re-discovers a small piece of this same iron that his father Rendell had recovered from the Drowning Cave during the after-prom party. With Tyler's help, Duncan forges it into the Alpha Key in the present-day timeline. This key possesses a singular, deadly property: when inserted into the chest of a possessed person, it instantly turns the demon inside into whispering iron. However, this effect is fatal to the physical host regardless of whether the demon is still inside, creating a tragic choice between saving the soul and preserving the body.

In Their Own Story

During the after-prom party in the sea cave, demons possessed several students while Dodge, inhabiting Bode Locke's body, sought to complete his takeover. Tyler Locke, having re-discovered the piece of whispering iron from his father, realized it was the only way to stop the demon. Working alongside Duncan, he forged the Alpha Key. Tyler then confronted Dodge in Bode's body. The key forced the demonic spirit back into the well, killing the spirit for a second time. However, because the key is fatal to the physical host when the demon is still inside, Bode's empty body had to be cremated before his soul could return to it. In the epilogue, Tyler uses this same magic again; he conjures Dodge's spirit and uses the Alpha Key to finally exorcise the demon from Lucas "Dodge" Caravaggio's soul, allowing Lucas's unpossessed soul to rest in death.

Therefore, it is typically used as a last resort or in scenarios where the soul can be restored later via other means, such as Tyler restoring Bode's spirit to his physical form using the Animal Key after the Alpha Key had been applied.
